The Syrian American Forum (SAF) strongly condemns the statements made by U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump in which he called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” Such statements only raise hatred and discrimination. They represent a wholesale punishment of an entire segment of the population of the U.S. and the world.
Mr. Trump should know better. His stated positions regarding a solution for the crisis in Syria have been more reasonable than any of the other presidential candidates. He should apply this logic to the priority of eradicating terrorism. As a presidential hopeful, he should work to galvanize harmony and support amongst Americans. As a possible leader of the world, he should be earning respect all over. This will only happen by getting people together in the face of the cancerous symptom of terrorism. As grandchildren and children of immigrants, we call on Mr. Trump to create the atmosphere of participation and belonging so that America benefits of a collective effort to combat terrorism. Terrorists claiming to be acting on the basis of Islam are but murderers that only choose certain inapplicable verses of this peace-loving religion as a justification for their hideous acts.
Most important, applying a generalized standard against a whole segment of the population, on a sectarian basis, will only increase the divisiveness the terrorists are aiming for. This is most obvious in Syria where terrorists such as the so-called ISIS, AlNusra and many other versions, hide behind Islam as a justification for their terror, murders and destruction. This is all happening with the tacit or public support of the U.S. and some allies such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and some European countries. These terrorists failed to achieve victory in Syria because the overwhelming majority of Syrian Muslims rejected their murderous rhetoric falsely based on an erroneous interpretation of the Islamic belief.
SAF calls on Mr. Trump to retract his statements and reassure Muslims of the United States and the world that America is the land of equality and opportunity, not a land of discrimination and divisiveness. In order to defeat terrorism, we need the good peace loving Muslims on our side. They are catalyst to the success of defeating the murderous terrorists. SAF also calls on Mr. Trump to advocate that protection of the United States of America begins with defeating these terrorists in Syria not supporting them, directly or indirectly, by alienating Muslims.
